Overview

The short version

Lampang's self-drive market is smaller than Chiang Mai's but genuinely useful for day trips to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, the Elephant Conservation Center and outlying districts that songthaews barely reach. This guide covers which agencies operate here, realistic costs, the licence and insurance rules that actually matter, and how to drive Lampang's roads safely.

01

Who rents self-drive cars here

Lampang's self-drive market is thin compared with Chiang Mai's, but it is real. International platforms including Rentalcars.com, Kayak and QEEQ list Lampang inventory from national chains such as Thai Rent A Car and Avis alongside local operators like Drive Car Rental and Chic Car Rent, with pickup arranged through Lampang Airport (LPT) or in the city. Rent Connected, a Lampang-based booking agent (Line ID @rentconnected), brokers both national-chain and local cars including Drive Point Car Rent, with pickup at the airport, the railway station, Central Plaza Lampang or elsewhere in the city.

02

What it costs

Aggregator listings for Lampang show economy and compact self-drive cars from roughly THB 900-2,000 a day depending on the vehicle, operator and season, broadly in line with national Thailand economy-car rates of THB 800-1,500 a day. Multi-day and monthly self-drive rates are typically available directly from the operator on request -- ask Thai Rent A Car or Rent Connected for a long-stay quote rather than relying on the daily aggregator price.

03

Licence & International Driving Permit

Bring your home driver's licence and, unless it is already printed in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) that covers passenger cars -- a motorcycle-only IDP does not cover a car. Most agencies want a full licence held for at least one to two years, a passport and a credit card in the renter's name for the security deposit; minimum age is usually 21, with some operators requiring 23-25 for larger vehicles.

04

Insurance, excess & deposits

Thailand's compulsory Por Ror Bor cover is third-party only and pays out very little, so confirm the rental includes a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and note the excess (deductible) you would owe after an accident -- ask whether it can be reduced with an additional daily fee. Photograph the car's existing scratches and dents against the rental contract before driving off, and never leave your passport as a deposit; a credit-card hold or cash deposit is standard.

05

Where to pick up

Lampang Airport (LPT), about 1.5 km south of the city centre, is the main pickup point for chain and aggregator bookings. City-centre pickup and drop-off is available through local and brokered operators around Central Plaza Lampang and the railway station area. Renters planning to explore Chiang Mai and Lampang together sometimes pick up in Chiang Mai instead, since its dealer network and vehicle choice are considerably larger.

06

Driving in Lampang -- roads, old town & burning season

Thailand drives on the left. Highway 1 (Phahonyothin Road) carries the bulk of through-traffic and connects the city centre to the airport and outlying districts; it is generally wide and well-signed. Kad Kong Ta old town's streets are narrow, one-way in places and busy with pedestrians and vendors, especially during the Saturday walking street market -- avoid driving through if you can, and expect limited parking near Talad Gao Road. The roughly February-April dry-season burning haze can significantly cut visibility on rural and highway routes alike; check conditions before longer drives during those months.

07

Self-drive day trips from Lampang

A rental car is genuinely useful for reaching Wat Phra That Lampang Luang (about 18 km southwest), the Thung Kwian Sunday market, and the Elephant Conservation Center -- all easy highway drives that are awkward without your own transport, since Lampang has no metered taxi network and songthaews thin out beyond the city centre.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Lampang?

Yes, unless your home licence is already printed in English. You need an IDP that specifically covers passenger cars -- a motorcycle-only IDP will not be accepted -- carried alongside your original home licence.
