Lampang weather & climate — what relocators should know

Lampang shares Chiang Mai's cool, hot and rainy seasons, but runs drier and hotter, and shares the same Feb-Apr burning-season haze with far less tourism awareness around it. Here's the month-by-month picture, written for people settling in long-term.

Overview

The short version

Lampang runs on the same broad northern-Thailand calendar as Chiang Mai - a cool season (November-February), a hot season (March-May) and a rainy season (June-October) - but it sits in its own inland valley, which makes it genuinely drier in the cool season and hotter at the April peak than its more famous neighbour. The most important seasonal factor for anyone actually living here is the February-April regional burning season, which fills the shared northern airshed with haze - a real planning consideration for residents, even though Lampang gets far less tourism-driven attention around it than Chiang Mai does. This page is written for people settling into BAANLYY's Lampang hub long-term, not for a holiday itinerary.

01

Lampang's three seasons

November - February · approx 17-32°C

Cool / dry season

Lampang's most comfortable stretch. Mornings and evenings turn genuinely cool - overnight lows dip to around 17°C in December and January - while days stay warm and dry. February is the driest month of the entire year here, averaging just 6mm of rain across a single rainy day, with humidity as low as 48-52%. This is the easiest season for settling into a new home, though air quality can begin deteriorating toward the end of February as the burning season approaches.

March - May · approx 22-36°C

Hot / dry season

This is where Lampang genuinely diverges from a generic "northern Thailand" climate: it sits in an inland valley with less airflow than Chiang Mai, and April regularly pushes daytime highs to around 35-36°C - some of the hottest readings recorded anywhere in the north. Humidity stays low into March (as low as 48%) before climbing toward the pre-monsoon storms of April and May. This period overlaps directly with the region's most serious seasonal hazard for residents: the burning-season haze.

June - October · approx 23-30°C

Rainy / southwest-monsoon season

The wettest stretch of the year, peaking in August (around 274mm across roughly 19-20 rainy days) and staying heavy through September. Rain typically arrives as afternoon or evening downpours rather than sustained all-day rain, and air quality is at its best during these months as the monsoon washes out any lingering haze.

What to pack or prepare

SeasonWhat to bring or prepare
Cool dry season (Nov-Feb)A light jacket or fleece for genuinely cool mornings and evenings, especially December and January. Daytime is warm enough for short sleeves.
Hot dry / burning season (Mar-May)The lightest, most breathable fabrics, high-SPF sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle. Add an N95/KN95 mask and have a HEPA purifier ready for the February-April haze.
Rainy season (Jun-Oct)A compact umbrella or packable rain jacket and quick-dry shoes for afternoon downpours. This is also the cleanest-air stretch of the year, so it's the best window for outdoor time.
FAQ

Lampang weather questions

Is Lampang's climate the same as Chiang Mai's?

Very similar in pattern - both share a cool season (November-February), a hot season (March-May) and a rainy season (June-October) - but Lampang runs noticeably drier and hotter. February averages just 6mm of rain here, and April regularly reaches 35-36°C, both more extreme than typical Chiang Mai readings, largely because Lampang sits in its own inland valley with less airflow.

How bad is the burning season in Lampang?

Lampang sits in the same northern Thailand airshed as Chiang Mai and shares its February-April burning-season haze, driven by agricultural and forest burning across the region. The practical difference for residents is that Lampang has far less tourism-driven public awareness, purifier retail presence and English-language health guidance around it than Chiang Mai does, so long-term residents need to plan for it proactively rather than expect it to be a well-signposted seasonal event.

What is the best time to move to Lampang?

November through February is the most comfortable window for the climate itself - cool, dry and clear. However, if avoiding the burning season entirely is a priority, aim to arrive after the first sustained May rains have cleared the air, since even the pleasant cool season transitions directly into February's haze buildup.

How hot does Lampang get?

Lampang is one of the hotter interior valley cities in northern Thailand. April is the peak, with daytime highs regularly reaching 35-36°C and overnight lows still around 25°C. Even the cool season sees daytime highs in the high 20s to low 30s; only December and January nights, dipping to around 17°C, feel genuinely cool by Thai standards.

When is the rainy season in Lampang, and is the air cleaner then?

The rainy season runs roughly June through October, peaking in August at around 274mm of rain across close to 20 rainy days. This is also when air quality is at its best all year, since the monsoon rains wash out any lingering haze - a useful contrast to the February-April burning season, when air quality is at its worst.
