Songkhla weather & best time to visit

A clear, month-by-month guide to Songkhla's warm, humid climate and its reversed monsoon pattern -- wettest October to December, unlike the rest of Thailand -- plus how the city's spot between Songkhla Lake and the Gulf shapes flood risk differently from inland Hat Yai.

Overview

The short version

Songkhla is warm and humid year-round with no distinct cool season, and its monsoon runs the reverse of the rest of Thailand: a drier, more reliable stretch from roughly January to September, and a northeast-monsoon wet season from October to December that peaks in November. The city's unusual geography -- a peninsula wedged between Songkhla Lake and the Gulf of Thailand -- gives it a different flood profile than inland Hat Yai, the province's largest city, even though both sit under the same monsoon system. See our Songkhla hub for the full picture.

Songkhla's seasons

January - September · approx 24-34°C

Drier season

Songkhla's longest and most reliable stretch of weather, though "dry" is relative in the deep south -- humidity stays high year-round and short showers can still turn up. Being on the coast, the city gets a steadier Gulf breeze than inland Hat Yai, which takes some of the edge off the hottest afternoons. This is the more predictable window for house-hunting around the Old Town, Samila Beach or the lakeside districts.

March - April · approx 25-34°C

Hot season peak

The warmest stretch of the year, coinciding with Songkran in April. Songkhla city itself runs a touch milder than inland Hat Yai thanks to the sea breeze off the Gulf, though humidity stays high everywhere in the province.

October - December · approx 23-30°C

Northeast-monsoon wet season

Songkhla's monsoon runs the reverse of central and northern Thailand -- wettest from October through December, peaking in November. The same system that brought Hat Yai's catastrophic November 2025 flood also put Songkhla city and several of its districts under DDPM flash-flood and mudslide alerts. This is the season to watch most closely before committing to a move or a low-lying property.

Best time to visit or move

For the most reliable weather and the lowest flood risk, come between January and September, with December through February offering the most comfortable, slightly cooler evenings. March to April is hottest, peaking around Songkran. The October-December monsoon brings Songkhla's heaviest rain and its real flood risk -- the same system that put the wider Hat Yai-Songkhla area under a red-zone flood declaration in November 2025 -- so it's worth timing a move outside this window where possible, or at minimum confirming a property's elevation and flood history first.

FAQ

Songkhla weather questions

What is the best time to visit or move to Songkhla?

Roughly January to September is the more reliable window, with lighter rainfall and lower flood risk than the October-December monsoon. Within that stretch, December through February brings the most comfortable, slightly cooler evenings, while March-April is hottest.

When is the rainy season in Songkhla, and how wet does it get?

Songkhla's wet season runs roughly October to December, peaking in November -- the reverse of central and northern Thailand's May-October monsoon. This is the same northeast-monsoon system that hits Hat Yai, the province's largest city; see our Hat Yai weather guide for that city's specific flood history.

Does Songkhla flood the same way Hat Yai does?

Not exactly. Hat Yai sits inland on a low-lying floodplain where the U-Tapao and Sadao rivers can overwhelm the city before draining toward Songkhla Lake. Songkhla city itself sits on a peninsula between that same lake -- Thailand's largest natural lake, which has grown shallower over time and less able to absorb heavy rain -- and the Gulf of Thailand, so its exposure during the same monsoon system leans more toward lake-level rise and coastal wave action than deep inland inundation. Both areas were placed under flood and flash-flood warnings during the same November 2025 event, so neither should be assumed safe by comparison.

How hot does Songkhla get?

Songkhla is warm to hot and humid year-round, with daytime highs typically 28-32°C and a March-April peak around 33-34°C at Songkran. The coastal Gulf breeze tends to make the city feel a touch milder than inland Hat Yai. There's no pronounced cool season -- humidity and warmth are fairly constant.

What should I pack for a move to Songkhla?

Light, breathable clothing for year-round humidity, sun protection for the March-April heat peak, and a proper umbrella or rain jacket plus quick-dry footwear for the October-December monsoon, when a lake-level rise or a rough day at Samila Beach can turn up with little warning.
