Thailand is one of Asia's premier golf destinations, with hundreds of courses ranging from championship-caliber layouts that have hosted Asian Tour and LPGA events to affordable municipal rounds. But the right base depends on what matters most to you: living directly on a fairway, having the largest possible choice of courses within a short drive, or pairing golf with a beach-resort lifestyle. Scan the table, then read the short verdict on each city. Every city links to its full hub with areas, condos and local guides.

Hua HinThailand's unofficial golf capitalOne of the highest concentrations of quality courses in the country — Black Mountain, Banyan, Palm Hills, Springfield Royal Country Club and Majestic Creek all within a compact area; several rank among Asia's top 100Membership and green fees are generally more accessible than Bangkok's top clubs, with strong resident and social-membership options aimed at the town's large expat baseThe strongest golf-community living in Thailand — condos and pool villas built directly around fairways at Black Mountain, Banyan and Palm Hills, many marketed specifically to golfing retireesOne of Thailand's drier coastlines with a shorter, milder wet season (Sep–Nov), making it playable more days per year than most of the country
PattayaLargest concentration of courses, easy Bangkok accessThe single largest cluster of golf courses in Thailand — Siam Country Club (Old & Plantation), Laem Chabang International, Burapha and Bangpra among roughly 20 courses within an hour, several with Asian Tour and LPGA event historyA wide spread from budget-friendly public courses to premium clubs like Siam Country Club and Laem Chabang, generally priced below Bangkok's top-tier clubsGolf-focused condo developments are less centralized than Hua Hin, but golfers commonly base themselves in Jomtien or East Pattaya for quick access to multiple courses without committing to a single on-course communityTropical with a wet season May–Oct similar to Bangkok; coastal breeze takes some edge off the heat
PhuketResort golf paired with beach lifestyleA smaller but high-quality set — Blue Canyon Country Club (Asian Tour and past LPGA/PGA event host), Laguna Golf Phuket, Loch Palm and Red Mountain, all built into the island's hills and resort beltGreen fees run higher than most of the country given the resort setting; residential and hotel-linked membership packages are common at Laguna and Blue CanyonEstablished golf-and-resort real estate around Laguna and Blue Canyon combines fairway villas with beach access and five-star hotel infrastructureTropical with a distinct wet season May–Oct; the island's hillier courses can be affected by afternoon storms in peak wet months
BangkokDeepest bench of courses, full city infrastructure40+ courses within about an hour of the city, including Thai Country Club, Alpine Golf & Sports Club and Muang Kaew Golf Club — several rank among Asia's best and have hosted Asian Tour eventsCorporate and individual memberships at top clubs run from roughly ฿300,000–฿1,500,000+ depending on club prestige, with lower-cost pay-and-play rounds widely available for non-membersGolf-adjacent condos cluster around Bang Na, On Nut and the eastern outskirts near Thai Country Club and Muang Kaew; most golfers here live citywide and drive out for tee times rather than living on-courseHot and humid year-round with a wet season May–Oct; early tee times avoid both the heat and afternoon downpours
Chiang MaiScenic mountain golf, smallest scene of the fiveThe smallest course count of these five cities, but scenic — Chiang Mai Highlands, Alpine Golf Resort Chiang Mai and Summit Green Valley set against mountain backdrops rather than flat coastal terrainThe most affordable membership and green fees of the five cities, in line with Chiang Mai's lower overall cost of livingGolf-adjacent living is informal compared with Hua Hin or Phuket — most golfers live in the city or nearby suburbs and drive to a handful of courses rather than choosing a dedicated golf-villa developmentCooler and drier than coastal Thailand for much of the year, though the Feb–Apr burning season brings haze that can affect visibility and air quality on-course

City-by-city verdict

Hua Hin · Thailand's unofficial golf capital

The clear pick if golf is a daily-life priority rather than an occasional outing. Hua Hin packs more highly-rated courses into a smaller area than anywhere else in the country, several with real estate built directly onto the fairways, and its drier climate means fewer rained-out rounds. It suits retirees and golfers who want to live inside the lifestyle, though it has less big-city amenity and flight access than Bangkok or Phuket.

Pattaya · Largest concentration of courses, easy Bangkok access

The volume play — no other Thai city puts this many quality courses within such easy reach of each other, and Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi and U-Tapao airports are both close by. It's the top choice for golf-trip regulars and groups who want variety round to round rather than a single home course, though the on-course residential communities that define Hua Hin are less developed here.

Phuket · Resort golf paired with beach lifestyle

The pick for golfers who want the round paired with a beach-resort life rather than a retirement town. Phuket's courses are fewer than Hua Hin's or Pattaya's but genuinely high-caliber, several with international tournament pedigree, and they sit inside a resort ecosystem with beaches, hotels and an international airport minutes away. It costs more per round than elsewhere and the wet season bites harder on some courses.

Bangkok · Deepest bench of courses, full city infrastructure

The choice for golfers who also want city infrastructure, direct flights and a wide range of course styles. Bangkok has more courses within reach than anywhere else in Thailand, including several that have hosted professional tour events, plus every dining, shopping and healthcare amenity of a global city. The trade-off is that golf here isn't a lifestyle wrapped around a fairway — you're driving to the course from wherever you live, and traffic can turn a short distance into a long one.

Chiang Mai · Scenic mountain golf, smallest scene of the five

The value and scenery pick rather than the volume pick. Chiang Mai has far fewer courses than Hua Hin, Pattaya or Phuket, but what's there is genuinely picturesque mountain golf at the lowest cost of the five cities — a good fit for retirees or long-stay residents for whom golf is one part of a broader low-cost, cultural lifestyle rather than the main draw. Skip the burning season (roughly February–April) if pristine conditions matter to you.

Golf, visas and relocation

Golf is a lifestyle draw rather than a visa category of its own, so retirees and long-stay residents typically pair it with the standard retirement (Non-Immigrant O/O-A) visa or the ten-year LTR visa for higher earners and investors. Because Hua Hin and Phuket are the two cities with the most developed golf-course residential communities, they're worth an early look if living inside a golfing lifestyle — rather than just visiting courses — is the goal. Read the full visa knowledge center before finalizing any relocation plan.
