What this is & why you'd need it

Staying fit is part of settling in, and Thailand has everything from international-standard chain gyms and boutique CrossFit boxes to traditional Muay Thai camps, yoga and Pilates studios, and recovery/wellness centres (sauna, ice bath, physio, massage). Foreigners use them both for everyday training and, in the case of Muay Thai and wellness retreats, as a reason to base themselves in a particular town. The main thing to get right is the contract: many gyms and studios sell long memberships or prepaid class packages, and the difference between a good deal and a sunk cost is in the small print.

What to look for

Questions to ask before you commit

Q. Can I pay monthly, and what is the real cost of a single month versus the annual plan?
Q. Does the membership auto-renew, and how much notice do I have to give to cancel?
Q. If I sign up for a class package, does it expire — and what happens to unused classes if I leave Thailand or the studio closes?
Q. Can I do a trial class or a day pass before committing?
Q. Are personal-training sessions, special classes or recovery facilities included or billed separately?

Red flags

Walk away if you see…
  • High-pressure sales for a long contract on your first visit, or a 'today only' joining discount
  • Large prepaid packages with short expiry windows — a common way unused classes quietly lapse
  • Auto-renewing memberships with a long or vague cancellation-notice requirement buried in the terms
  • No trial, no day pass and reluctance to put pricing in writing
  • A studio or camp asking for many months up front with no clear refund policy if it closes or you relocate

What it typically costs

Pricing ranges enormously — from very affordable local gyms and Muay Thai camps to premium international chains and boutique studios — so treat any single figure as orientation only and compare a true monthly rate against the annual one. The biggest hidden cost is rarely the headline price; it is a long lock-in or a prepaid package you don't fully use. Favour month-to-month or a small trial package until you know you'll stick with it, and always get the cancellation terms in writing.

Frequently asked

Should I sign an annual gym membership when I first arrive?Usually not on day one. While you are still settling in you may change neighbourhoods, and a 12-month lock-in becomes dead money if you move across town or leave. Start month-to-month or with a short package, confirm the gym suits your schedule and commute, and only commit to a longer term once you're sure. Always check how the membership cancels and whether it auto-renews before you sign.
Are Muay Thai camps suitable for beginners?Yes — most camps welcome complete beginners and tourists alongside serious fighters, and a good kru will scale the training to your level. Look for a camp with experienced trainers who communicate clearly, a clean facility, and the option to pay per session or by the week before committing to a month. As with any fitness commitment, be cautious about paying many months up front, and get the terms in writing.
What's the catch with prepaid class packages? The catch is usually expiry. A '20-class' or unlimited-month package often has a short validity window, and any classes you don't use by the deadline are simply lost — which suits the studio more than you. Before buying, ask whether classes expire, what happens to unused credit if you travel or leave, and whether there is any refund if the studio closes. For an irregular schedule, pay-as-you-go or a small package is often better value than a big prepaid block.
