01What this is & why you'd need it
International schools teach a foreign curriculum (British, American, IB and others) in English, serving expat and Thai families. Relocating families use them for continuity of education and an internationally recognised path to university. Thailand — especially Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai — has a deep field of options across price points.
02What to look for
- Curriculum fit (British/IGCSE, American, IB) with your child's path and home country
- Accreditation and university-placement record
- Total annual cost: tuition plus enrolment, deposit, uniforms, buses and capital fees
- Commute time from candidate homes — a major daily quality-of-life factor
03Questions to ask before you commit
Q. What's the all-in annual cost, including the one-off and capital fees?
Q. What's the curriculum, accreditation and recent university-placement record?
Q. What are class sizes and the teacher turnover rate?
Q. Is there a waiting list or assessment for my child's year group?
04Red flags
Walk away if you see…
- Quoted tuition that hides large enrolment, deposit or 'development' fees
- Vague answers on accreditation or staff turnover
- No clear admissions process or assessment
05What it typically costs
Fees span a very wide range — from mid-tier bilingual schools to elite international schools whose top-year tuition runs into seven figures of baht — plus one-off enrolment, refundable deposits and annual extras. Budget the all-in number, not just tuition, and factor in the commute.
06Frequently asked
Where are most international schools?Bangkok has the largest concentration, with strong clusters in Phuket and Chiang Mai too. Choosing the school often drives where families choose to live, because commute time matters daily — use our area pages to weigh neighbourhoods near shortlisted schools.
British, American or IB?Pick for continuity and your child's next step: IGCSE/A-Levels (British) and the IB are globally portable; American suits US-bound families. Visit, and ask about university destinations.
How early should we apply?Popular schools and year groups fill up — enquire as early as possible, ideally before you arrive, as some require assessments and have waiting lists.
