American (K–12, Christian-affiliated) · Central Chiang Mai, near the Ping River / Kaew Nawarat area
Chiang Mai International School (CMIS) traces its roots to 1945, when missionaries with the Church of Christ in Thailand opened the Chiang Mai Children's Center for the children of Christian workers in the region; classes under what became CMIS began on 1 June 1954 with 8 students. The school gained formal legal status in 1984 and adopted the Chiang Mai International School name for classes starting in September 1985, progressively adding high-school grades through 1992-95. It is the city's oldest international school, delivering an English-language, American-sourced K-12 curriculum from a centrally located campus near the Ping River, and remains popular with long-staying expat and missionary families.
