Asian Institute of Technology at a glance
AIT is the single biggest reason Pathum Thani has a resident international academic community, and it is not a Thai university. It began in 1959 as the SEATO Graduate School of Engineering, established by eight member countries of the South East Asia Treaty Organization. In 1967 Thailand's Constituent Assembly approved a charter for the renamed Asian Institute of Technology and the enabling act was published in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, making the institute independent of SEATO and empowering it to grant degrees in its own right.
Teaching is entirely in English and entirely postgraduate — AIT awards master's and doctoral degrees but no bachelor's degree — across engineering and technology, environment and resource development, and management. Its campus sits at kilometre 42 of Phahonyothin Highway in Khlong Nueng, a short distance from Thammasat's Rangsit campus, and its students and faculty come from across Asia and beyond, which is why the housing, cafes and services along that stretch of the highway are unusually international for a Bangkok-fringe province.
