RMUTT is the largest state university headquartered inside Pathum Thani, and its history begins with a protest rather than a founding gift. On 9 January 1974, vocational students across Thailand campaigned against a system that capped their studies at diploma level; the College of Technology and Vocational Education was created by act of parliament on 27 February 1975 in response, with an explicit mandate to teach vocational subjects all the way to degree level. For its first decade it had no campus of its own and taught its degree students inside other institutions.
In 1984 the Treasury Department allotted the college a single block of land for a degree-level centre: 610 rai 3 ngan 41 wa at Khlong Hok in Khlong Luang District, plus 109 rai 3 ngan 4 wa on the north bank of Khlong Rangsit in Thanyaburi District — 720 rai 2 ngan 55 wa in total, straddling the boundary between the two districts. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn laid the foundation stone on 7 June 1988, and on 15 September that year King Bhumibol granted the institution the name Rajamangala, still marked annually as Rajamangala Day. The 2005 Rajamangala University of Technology Act turned the single institute into nine separate universities, of which Thanyaburi is one — and although the university carries the Thanyaburi name, the address it publishes today is in Khlong Luang District.
