Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University under the Royal Patronage at a glance

VRU carries the oldest institutional lineage of any university now seated in Pathum Thani, though it did not start here. Princess Valaya Alongkorn granted a building and roughly four rai of land to the Ministry of Education, and the Phetchaburi Wittayalongkorn teacher-training school opened on 4 June 1932 on what is now Phetchaburi Road in Ratchathewi, Bangkok — two years before Thammasat University was itself founded in the capital. The school became a teachers' college in 1970 and moved to its present Pathum Thani site in 1972, at kilometre 48 of Phahonyothin Road in Khlong Nueng.

King Bhumibol took the college under royal patronage in 1974, granted the Rajabhat name to teachers' colleges nationwide in 1992, and permitted the change to Valaya Alongkorn in 2002; the Rajabhat University Act elevated it to full university status on 15 June 2004. The Khlong Nueng campus has grown to 381 rai 2 ngan 91 wa after a 2012 land purchase to the north, and the university teaches through faculties of education, science and technology, humanities and social sciences, management science, agricultural technology, industrial technology and public health, plus a College of Innovative Management and a graduate school. It runs a second campus in Sa Kaeo province and two demonstration schools on the Pathum Thani site, one of them an international programme.
