Huachiew Chalermprakiet University at a glance
Huachiew Chalermprakiet University dates its own history to 1941, when the Poh Teck Tung Foundation -- described on the university's own site as the largest charitable Chinese organisation in Thai society -- opened the Huachiew Hospital Midwifery School. In 1982 the foundation expanded the midwifery school into a nursing college named Huachiew College, teaching a Bachelor of Science in nursing and midwifery and later adding a Faculty of Social Work. In 1990, the foundation's eightieth year, it resolved to raise the college to university status; the royally conferred name Huachiew Chalermprakiet University was granted on 11 May 1992.
HCU's campus sits at 18/18 Bangna-Trad Road km 18 in Bang Chalong sub-district, Bang Phli District. It teaches to bachelor's, master's and doctoral level across faculties including nursing, public health, pharmaceutical sciences, science and technology, business administration, law and Chinese studies -- the last a direct expression of its overseas-Chinese charitable origins, and the reason its Chinese-language provision is unusually deep for a Thai university of its size.
